Shadow Flicker is the term for moving shadows caused by the rotating blades especially during the early morning and late afternoon hours when the sun elevation is low and wind turbines cast a long shadow. As this shadow moves with the blades at a frequency of around 1 blade shadow every second (1 Hertz) it can be quite annoying when houses are too close and either east or west of a turbine. Zephyros Consulting prepares detailed Shadow Flicker Studies for you carefully analysing the impact of moving shadows based on topography, vegetation and of course turbine positions.
If shadow flicker impacts occur they can be easily mitigated by planting screening vegetation. It is important to assess this effect during development to avoid any negative surprises in community consultation programmes.
