Wind Turbines are very large structures requiring special oversized transport especially for blades (up to 50m long) and tower sections. Large cranes are required with limited climbing capabilities and substantial requirements for internal access tracks. Turbine foundations require hundreds of cubic-metres of concrete delivered by a large amount of trucks often from local batching plants.
The construction of a wind farm is a huge logistical exercise and the transport of components, of concrete and gravel but also of personnel may have a significant impact on the immediate neighbourhood. Transport routes for oversized vehicles have to be carefully selected and roading authorities want to know a lot of details in the permitting process.
